Observatory Construction

The observatory was built around an existing galvanised steel pier that had been set into a concrete base a year earlier. I got tired of dragging the telescope back and forth for each observing session.

The design is a split roof roll-off concept, allowing each roof segment to be moved independently. A modified garage door opener can be used to open the roof remotely. The Losmandy G11 mount, lights, cameras and roof can be operated via a USB relay board connected to a HP Netbook. The netbook is accessible remotely via the home wifi network using VNC. Everything is powered by 2 x 200AmpHr deep cycle batteries which are charged through the day by a 120w solar panel.
